Third Point of Distinction
Strategic Efforts to Support DEI across campus
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
UM has had a committee focused on diversity and inclusivity for many years. But, in the last few years, we have invested heavily in full-time professional staff dedicated to supporting this work and advising our leadership on what it looks like to truly build a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and equity at UM. Efforts include:
- The creation of the Women's Leadership Initiative (WLI) to support emerging women leaders in staff and faculty roles across campus
- The SEA Change initiative, which is the student-focused counterpart to WLI and offers courses, mentorship, and outreach to encourage the leadership of young women students on our campus
- The recruitment and hire of a Tribal Outreach Specialist that works directly with tribal communities around the state not only to recruit Native students but also to better identify the things UM can do to better support Native students and encourage the completion of 4 year degrees
- The recruitment and hire of a Director of Inclusive Excellence. This and the Tribal Outreach Specialist report directly to the President and are meant to help drive the Priorities for Action that relate to student and employee success
