A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Preservation of Open Space
MU has recently adopted a policy, in accordance with LEED guidelines, with the intent to avoid the development of inappropriate sites and to reduce the environmental impact from the location of a building on a site. MU has made it a Campus standard to avoid the development of Land including both a historic field and garden, all previously undeveloped land whose elevation is lower than a 10-foot increment above the 100-yr flood elevation, and all previously undeveloped land within 50 feet of a water body. Also, a study is currently underway to map the habitat of the endangered Indiana bat and whether that habitat includes any campus ground. If evidence becomes available that the habitat does indeed exist on campus, the locations of habitat will be assessed and potentially included in the land to be avoided.
