A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
In 2010 UMKC re-purposed through renovation two buildings on campus; Cherry Hall Residence Hall into class rooms and offices home of the Arts and Sciences and Psychology Departments, as well as Katz Hall: from class room and research space into the home of the Architecture and Urban Planning Department. The spaces are now much more resource and energy efficient due to the open space concept that takes advantage of day lighting and retrofit of energy conserving systems and fixtures. Making the decision to renovate rather than demolish and rebuild both buildings saved thousands of tons of materials from the local landfills, repurposed through reuse the functionality of the buildings to better suit student, faculty and staff needs in the 21st century, while saving resources including energy, soft and hard furnishings, windows , doors and hardware and money.
