Course Inventory

A brief description of the methodology used to determine the total number of courses offered and to identify sustainability course offerings, including the definitions used and the process for reviewing and/or validating the course inventory :
To determine the total number of courses offered, we manually pulled all courses from 2017-18 that had enrollment from the online course catalog and removed the following:
-Performance Arts (theatre and music)
-Physical Education (tennis, jogging, etc.)
-Internships/Practicums
-Independent Study (we also excluded “individual-based courses,” which is allowable per the STARS technical manual)
-Special/selected topics
-Thesis/Dissertations
-Clinical courses
-Research seminars and proposal courses in which people presented research. We felt those courses counted under the “special topics” exclusion as the topics vary and the classes are “Z” grades.
-2+2 courses - Degree comes from medical center, not UM.
Cross-listed courses were only counted once. We did not count individual sections. Courses that were 500 level or above were counted as graduate courses.
To identify sustainability course offerings, we reviewed each individual course description and in some instances contacted faculty members to confirm course content.
Note: In removing thesis/dissertation courses, special/selected topics, and individual/independent study courses, our total course count for graduate-level courses was significantly impacted as many of these courses were 500 level or above.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
