At the University of Minnesota, University Health and Safety (UHS) is charged with providing leadership resources, and services to protect the environment, and to ensure the health and safety of the University's students, faculty, staff, patients, and visiting public. University Health and Safety supports a safe, healthy and sustainable University environment through its work. UHS has over 60 employees in six departments that work cooperatively with each other and clients to provide comprehensive safety services throughout the University system, including Biosafety and Occupational Health, Emergency Management, Radiation Safety, Environmental Compliance, Industrial Hygiene, Lab & Research Safety and Workplace Safety. UHS provides written programs to address health and safety regulations, regularly audit clients and provide required training to employees. Each system campus (Morris, Crookston, Duluth and Rochester) has at least one UHS employee working full-time supporting the campus. All incidents and injuries are recorded electronically to facilitate the maintenance of the OSHA 300 log, workers compensation program, claims management support, and incident investigation program.

All incidents are reported via an electronic first report of injury. These reports are reviewed by employees of University Health and Safety as meeting the definition of "OSHA recordable" and coded appropriately for inclusion in the OSHA 300 log. All reports receive a claim number and are supported by the University's claims management company, regardless of being recordable or not.
