A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with sustainable building operation and maintenance guidelines and policies:
All buildings on campus are operated and maintained taking into consideration impacts on the surrounding site, energy consumption, usage of environmentally preferable materials, indoor environmental quality, and water consumption, in accordance with the Regent's Policy on Sustainability and Energy Efficiency. The Policy states in Subd. 3 and 4 that, "The University shall undertake a continuous improvement process that seeks to meet the operational performance targets, goals, and objectives designed to achieve sustainability... [And that] The University shall undertake a process to increase energy efficiency, reduce dependence on non-renewable energy, and encourage the development of energy alternatives through research and innovation." It also requires that specific sustainability objectives and targets are set regarding " (a) physical planning and development, including buildings and infrastructure; (b) operations; (c) transportation; (d) purchasing; and (e) waste management and abatement." In addition, all major renovations at the University with state bonding money must follow the rigorous Minnesota B3 benchmarking standards. http://www.msbg.umn.edu/ These projects then must be entered into the state's benchmarking system, which tracks and ensures compliance with metrics regarding performance management, site and water, energy and atmosphere, indoor environmental quality, and materials and waste.
