A brief description of the campaign(s):
It All Adds Up is a University of Minnesota resource conservation program. The It All Adds Up goal for Fiscal Year 2010 (i.e. July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010) was a 5% energy reduction through culture change and building recommissioning and 10,000 individual pledges to conserve energy.
Students (and employees) were encouraged to take an online energy reduction pledge. The pledge text was: "To do my part in helping the University of Minnesota reduce electrical consumption by 5 percent by 2010, I pledge to: Work together to achieve a comfortable temperature in our office area, eliminating the need for fans or space heaters; Turn off lights when offices, conference rooms, restrooms, or break areas aren't in use—even when just leaving for lunch or a meeting; Designate a "last to leave" policy—the last person to leave the office turns off all of the lights; Reduce the number of e-mails and documents printed; Set departmental printers on automatic two-sided printing; Schedule meetings in conference rooms appropriate to their size; Use power strips to turn off equipment that uses power even when in standby mode."
It All Adds Up also began a recycling initiative in 2010, with the goal of recovering 5% (450 tons) of campus waste for recycling by the end of 2012. Such an increase would prevent nearly 900 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere and save more than $50,000 annually.
