Sustainability Advocates can be residence hall council positions (either officially in constitutions or ad hoc), Community Advisor (CA) special opportunities, Community Development Coordinators (CDCs), or other involved student leaders. Assistant Residence Directors (ARDs)/Residence Directors (RDs) can appoint or elect these people.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Sustainability Advocates receive peer training from the Sustainability Education Coordinator (SEC) and the Co-Chairs of the HRL Sustainability Committee. Training consists of covering sustainability as an economic, social, and environmental concept, how-to program, PR, etc.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

There is no specific budget for the Sustainability Advocates; they work with pre-existing programming funds within the 11 buildings structures. The positions are volunteer.

The position is posted on the University's employment website. The HRL Sustainability Committee Co-Chair (and future supervisor) selects the Sustainability Education Coordinator (SEC) from the pool of applicants received.

The position receives training from the Co-Chairs of the HRL Sustainability Committee. Training consists of covering sustainability as an economic, social, and environmental concept, how-to program, public relations, department orientation, etc.

An external grant structure funds the Sustainability Education Coordinator position.

The SEC Oversees $1,200 programming budget for in building sustainability efforts. The position also has access to pre-existing programming funds within the 11 buildings structures.

Students apply for the internship and are then selected by UDS staff based on their applications and interview process.


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (3rd program):

Green Team training is held twice a year in a day long event. The students learn an overview of programs that dining services hosts and promotes, and how to communicate these programs to the campus community. One event they work to organize and staff is the Eat Well, Live Well event, which promotes healthy and sustainable food choices. At the training, students learn about the composting process and how to communicate that information to customers, as they are responsible for promoting and assisting customer with the composting program daily in Coffman Union.

Students are paid through the University Dining Services support budget for student employees.

The program was formalized by UDS in September 2007. There are currently three paid intern Green Team Positions.

Green teamers interact with students in many different venues throughout the year. They staff the Eat Well, Live Well Event, do programming in the residence halls, and are stationed daily in Coffman Union's cafeteria. Interactions are tracked at Coffman; however this number wouldn't include other programs that Green Teamers attend as well.
