A brief description of the institution’s efforts to support alternative fuel and power technology in its motorized fleet:

UMD Facilities Management (FM) replaces vehicles via a request form that is evaluated to ensure the purchased unit is the right size - meeting the intended use with the most efficient vehicle possible. By doing this, we have downsized many large vehicles (pick-up trucks) to smaller, more fuel-efficient models (small vans) and are are working to purchase and incorporate electric vehicles as appropriate for the duties required of the vehicle. Twelve additional departments across campus own vehicles of varying ages and a working group has initially been formed to encourage conversation, collaboration, and information sharing around vehicle replacement and opportunities around electric vehicles. Additionally, departments are working to evaluate vehicle ownership needs and to see if cross-departmental vehicle sharing could reduce the overall number of vehicles the campus owns and maintains.
