Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Stop the Thud program is a survey linked to an ArcGIS map that allows individuals on our campus to report any bird strike they see. The program was put in place during the Spring semester of 2024 by the Office of Sustainability and provides us with information regarding the date the bird was found, the time of day, the GPS location of the strike, and the condition they found the bird (injured, long dead, recently dead).
Individuals filling out the form are also able to include photos of the bird to assist us in identifying the species as well as include photos that provide context to the strike: which building they are believed to have hit and the location on the building where the strike occurred if they can identify it.
This data is used by the Office of Sustainability to determine where on campus strikes are most prevalent, when strikes are occurring, and which species are most affected. This is then used to determine where preventative measures would be most impactful and to measure/monitor how impactful they are after installation.
