A brief description of other inter-campus collaborative efforts around sustainability during the previous year :

The University of Minnesota Duluth has two major collaborations that engage with students across the U of M system.
The first collaboration is the SELFSustain conference. This conference is a two day retreat that enables students from all disciplines to meet with other UMN students about current sustainability efforts, brainstorm about sustainability-related topics, and make connections across the U of M system. This conference rotates between different UMN campuses to provide students with the opportunity to experience the different perspectives within the U of M and tour the operational sustainability initiatives in place at each campus as well. In 2023, Duluth hosted the conference and had student-moderated discussion sessions ranging from Sustainability in Student Housing to Nuclear Energy. The conference also included a sustainability tour of the UMD campus and a sustainability careers panel.
The second collaboration is the Sustainability Symposium. The Symposium is a U of M system-wide event that involves students presenting their sustainability projects, artwork, research, and other ideas to their peers and other campus attendees through lightning talks, poster sessions, and displays of creative works. In 2023, UMD’s Emma Hill won her section in a “Lighting Talk” called Rights of Nature which detailed the movement to grant nature legal rights for protection. Over 70+ students present their work on sustainability topics across all campuses.
