The following trainings encompass the many facets of sustainability at UMD and are in alignment with other STARS categories (wellness, equity, climate, etc.).

The University offers a Wellbeing Employee Program organized by six dimensions of social sustainability to positively influence non-academic staff. The six dimensions include financial, social, emotional, physical, community, and career. Resources through the program include on-demand video fitness classes, mindfulness and meditation practices, events and webinars, and recipes and nutrition resources. Events and webinars include various Lunch and Learns held monthly by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Disability Resources, and more.

The UMD Office of Student Life host monthly Lunch on a Mission events that cater to Student Life staff in order to have a facilitated conversation about a topic that is relevant to their work within student affairs and as higher education professionals. Topics for the 23-24 academic year include Free Speech & U: The First Amendment at UMD, Long Covid, Crockpots and Microwaves: Introverts and Extroverts in Student Affairs, The Impact of Professional Staff on Student Success Within Higher Education, and Maple Syruping: From Trees To Pancakes. Previous year topics include Managing Uncertainty, Creativity, Sleep, Physical Fitness, Mindfulness, Happiness, Eating Well, and Getting Outdoors.

The Duluth Chapter of the Institute on the Environment involves UMD staff through a variety of events and discussions regarding sustainability and climate change impacts. For the 23-24 academic year, IonE @ UMD arranged the Conference of Parties 28 Talk-Back: UMN Delegation Takeaways from Dubai, a panel of UMN observer delegates to the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 and three unique series discussions such as the People & Planet Series, STEP seminar series, and Midwest Climate Adaption Science Center series.

The University of Minnesota Office for Equity and Diversity hosts virtual workshops for the Equity Certificate Hosted Online (ECHO) program. The Equity Certificate Hosted Online (ECHO) Program helps learners develop tools necessary for advancing equity and diversity in all aspects of their personal and professional lives. The program offers a theoretical framework for understanding equity and diversity work, develops necessary skills, and gives direct experience working and communicating across differences.

A brief description of any external professional development and training opportunities in sustainability that are supported by the institution :

UMD Grounds staff attend Winter Snow Removal training for proper snow removal and storage as well as salt application. The training is developed and held in line with Facilities Management snow removal goals and to further develop and support those goals.

Key outdoor staff attend stormwater management training to detect illicit discharge, reduce the quantity, and improve the quality of stormwater flowing away from the UMD campus. Six control measures guide the staff in proper stormwater management which is reported through a mandatory stormwater permit with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

The Environmental Health & Safety office offers various Health, Safety, and Risk Management training to support employees in tasks they may conduct and potential hazards they may be exposed to. The trainings include general health and safety, biohazards, radiation, and more. A detailed list of supported training is available on the website.
