A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
IonE @UMD’s mission is to accelerate the transition to a future where people and the environment prosper together. To further this goal, students, faculty and staff across disciplines will work together for sustainability by engaging in education, research and leadership training. IonE stands for Institute on the Environment. It was established in 2016 on the Twin Cities campus, as their mission states, "to lead the way toward a future in which people and the environment prosper together." IonE @UMD began operating on the UMD campus in the 2018 fall semester.
Julie Etterson, UMD Swenson College of Science and Engineering professor, will oversee IonE activities at UMD. Julie sees this partnership with IonE as a great opportunity for further growth in UMD’s sustainability mission.
A message from Dr. Julie Etterson, Campus Lead
As we approach the end of our first year of having a hub of the Institute on the Environment at UMN-D, we would like to express our thanks to Dr. Jessica Hellmann (Executive Director of IonE) and Duluth administrators who have supported this effort. In the last year, we have organized or co-organized twenty-six events for IonE Affliates and IonE Partners, some of which were available remotely from the Twin Cities. We are looking forward to our second year where we will continue to build the Duluth hub, expand the availability of environmental leadership programming, stimulate interdisciplinary interactions, and develop strategies for community engagement.
