The Sustainability Office was established in Fall 2008 to communicate, coordinate, and assess sustainability efforts on the UMD campus. Our goal is to make sustainability a central theme for everything we do at UMD.

A brief description of the sustainability coordinator’s position:

The sustainability coordinator is responsible for the coordination and advancement of existing and emerging sustainability programs and initiatives at UMD. Sustainability is meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. A main function of this position is to reduce UMD's carbon footprint. Primary responsibilities are to assess, coordinate and communicate operational and academic sustainability efforts as prioritized by the steering committee and administration, and to serve as liaison to all campus units, working with faculty, students and staff.
The position reports to the Director of Facilities Management and supports the UMD Sustainability Steering Committee in developing a cohesive and organized approach to sustainability initiatives on campus and within Duluth.
