A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) leads and supports university-wide initiatives focused on the recruitment of a diverse faculty, staff and student body, while fostering an inclusive and equitable community at the University of Michigan. ODEI also engages surrounding communities in mission-focused, mutually beneficial partnerships. The vision of the office is to envision a diverse University where all thrive and excel.
The ODEI launched a 5 year Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in October 2016, and is currently transitioning to DEI 2.0 - second five-year initiative due to launch in October 2023. Our strategic plan implementation has seen significant progress, with new DEI initiatives being incorporated into many aspects of the university’s mission and operations. Our progress is documented each year in our annual Progress Report, which is shared with the campus community each fall, as part of U-M’s Diversity Summit (http://diversity.umich.edu/strategic-plan/progress-report/).
In addition, our Unit-Based Strategic Objectives and Action Items document provides a summary report on more than 2,500 action items of the 50 plans developed by individual school, college and campus units (https://diversity.umich.edu/strategic-plan/progress-report/).

A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence, anti-oppression, anti-racism, and/or social inclusion trainings and activities:

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training is provided through the department of Organizational Learning, offering educational courses available free of charge, as well as assisting in facilitated discussions for units or teams. Organizational Learning also launched “Cultivating a Culture of Respect,” mandatory online training for faculty and staff designed to provide information about maintaining a respectful, inclusive and equitable working and learning environment free from sexual harassment and misconduct; raising awareness of U-M’s commitment to creating a safe, harassment-free environment.
U-M provides sexual assault awareness and prevention education as well as bystander training to all incoming students and offers faculty and staff education and training to foster and maintain a welcoming, supportive, inclusive and diverse working and learning environment.
Faculty and staff in Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Flint and Michigan Medicine are encouraged to complete the online Preventing Harassment and Discrimination program. The training provides information about how the university responds to, and how we can help prevent, sexual assault, intimate partner violence, sexual harassment and stalking.
Additional student-focused programs:
The Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs offers two types of teach-ins: Anti-Racism and Coalition Building (https://mesa.umich.edu/teach-ins-workshops)
The Trotter Multicultural Center offers Intercultural Learning Program (https://trotter.umich.edu/article/intercultural-learning-program) and Interfaith Program (https://trotter.umich.edu/article/interfaith-program) offering various workshops and events.
