The University Units Leadership Council (UULC) informs implementation pathways for U-M’s carbon neutrality efforts, with its members facilitating contributions and buy-in from organizational units throughout the university. The UULC plays a critical role in providing university-wide perspectives and facilitating unit-level engagement and participation to foster culture change throughout the institution.
The UULC:
- Represents the breadth of organizational units spanning the university
- Reviews work plans and outputs produced by various working groups, with an eye toward assessing budgetary impacts, implementation challenges, and relationships to other U-M priorities.
- Provides input and guidance on complex organizational issues associated with implementing the many dimensions of the university’s carbon neutrality initiative

A brief description of each sustainability office:

1.The Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) serves as a focal point for sustainable campus operations, and collaborates with academic and research units, auxiliaries, and student groups to further efforts toward reaching the campus wide Sustainability Goals. Additionally, OCS is responsible for tracking and reporting the progress toward these goals, and communicating with the campus and surrounding community to engage staff, students and faculty.
2. Special Advisor to the president for carbon neutrality strategy, with responsibility for leading and coordinating the university's efforts to proactively address climate change.
3. Graham Sustainability Institute - Mobilizes the expertise and passion of scholars, partners, and decision-makers to work together and bring world-class research to real-world sustainability challenges.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

As efforts toward university-wide carbon neutrality progress, U-M continues to work toward its 2025 Ann Arbor campus sustainability goals in the areas of Greenhouse Gases, Landfill Waste, and Community Culture.
Activities and Accomplishments:
• Energy conservation: Development and execution of energy conservation measures in general fund buildings slowed dramatically with the pandemic, but increased in FY22 as new projects were funded and launched.
• Wind power purchase agreement: Began sourcing energy from new DTE wind parks in spring 2021, reducing
U-M’s emissions by more than 100,000 metric tons of CO2 annually.
• Central Power Plant expansion: A new highly-efficient turbine is expected to begin operation in early 2022, reducing emissions by approximately 400,000 metric tons of CO2 within the first 10 years of operation
• Purchased four electric buses to be delivered in 2022, as a step toward decarbonizing the U-M vehicle fleet.
• Expanded daily parking pass options to support remote work and reduced commuting.
• Launched “Adopt a Compost Bin” pilots to expand publicfacing compost bins.
• With Athletics and other campus partners, improved zero waste efforts at football games.
• Approved the construction of a geothermal exchange (geo-exchange) system near the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building, and residence hall on North Campus
