The University of Michigan's Graham Sustainability Institute has an incentive program to fund field-based sustainability-focused courses for undergraduates. Interested faculty can submit proposals for new courses including a syllabus and proposed budget. Positive outcomes in the past three years have included the successful development of new sustainability-focused courses in Kenya, Wyoming (U.S.A.), Detroit, China and Ghana.
A brief description of the incentives that faculty members who participate in the program(s) receive:
Proposals are reviewed and funding will be provided if they are accepted. Funds are typically used to offset the additional costs of the field experience compared to a classroom course, thus lowering the barrier to entry for students to engage in these experiences. The funds can also be used to compensate faculty for the additional time that field-based courses require.
