A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:

All electronic waste is disposed of through U-M Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Department insuring that all e-waste is collected by contracted recycler. Recycler is chosen only after an audit of their process confirms that all equipment is processed in North America by a fully permitted facility in full compliance with all local, state, and federal guidelines/regulations/laws pertaining to the proper and environmentally sound recycling of electronics equipment.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:

All e-waste is collected by UM OSEH department if Property Disposition is unable to resell the materials as usable. UM OSEH uses an approved contracted recycler to handle the materials.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for student-generated materials :

Students residing in on campus housing are asked to take unwanted electronics to designated e-waste areas located in each residence hall. This material is then collected by the UM OSEH department for proper recycling.

The UM Office of Campus Sustainability in coordination with the Ann Arbor public schools organizes and sponsors an annual e-waste event open to the general public and local businesses where anyone may drop off e-waste free of charge.
