The University of Michigan Provost’s instructions to Schools and Colleges for putting together tenure and promotion casebooks make several references to the value and importance of interdisciplinary work. For example:
• The instructions on the cover letter from the Dean/Director include: "It is important that non-traditional forms of scholarly production are given as much scrutiny as the more traditional/disciplinary work. It is important to ensure that individuals receive full credit for their contributions to interdisciplinary and/or collaborative scholarly projects."
• The instructions on documentation of research or creative work include: "For faculty with interdisciplinary appointments, please comment on his/her contributions to interdisciplinary activities with regard to research."
• The template letter to be used to solicit external review includes this paragraph to use when appropriate: "Dr. X is engaged in research that is interdisciplinary in nature. [He/she holds a joint appointment in the department of Y and Z.] We invite your consideration of the interdisciplinary nature of X's work in your review of his/her scholarly contributions.
