A brief description of the institution’s community garden:
The Gifford Arboretum Sustainability Garden, through the leadership of Dr. Richard Weisskoff has developed a partnership with local elementary schools to transfer knowledge, offer support and use the Sustainability garden as a nursery for plants used in the school garden.
The Gifford Arboretum Sustainability Garden is located on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. Up until summer of 2018, it was a “temporary” dumping ground for tree trimmings etc. from around campus. For almost 5 years before this, U Miami faculty and students had been campaigning for a dedicated gardening spaces for organizations and classes. During the summer of 2018 the site was cleared and leveled. Garden creation began in August 2018 and has been growing and beautifying since then.
Since 2022, the Sustainability Garden hosts the Undergraduate Student CommUnity Garden. In 2023, the Sustainability Garden steering committee decided to open raised beds to staff and faculty that didn't have a garden at home.
