The Abess Center's Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Policy program enables students to tap into synergistic research networks across a range of schools and colleges at the University of Miami, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, the Miller School of Medicine, the School of Law, School of Communication, School of Architecture, and the College of Engineering. The graduate program draws upon existing interdisciplinary collaborations that have been created by the Abess Center.

A brief description of the graduate degree program (2nd program):
The STEM-designated program develops your analytical and quantitative skills and sets students up for success in leading sustainable business practices. The distinctive curriculum is based on three principles – a focus on business, data-driven decisions informed by science, and corporate sustainability – to meet the unique business challenges that our students will face in the workforce. A singular Capstone Project enables students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, either through an internship, an entrepreneurial start-up, or a sustainability consulting assignment for a specific area of business.

A brief description of the graduate degree program (3rd program):
The Master of Professional Science in Urban Sustainability and Resilience is designed for students interested in acquiring the knowledge, skills and hands-on practical engagement necessary for contributing to the urban challenges confronting cities on the front lines of climate change. Focusing on challenges such as health, housing, crime, the environment, and sea-level rise, students will gain an understanding of the spatial and temporal transitions involved in pathways toward urban sustainability.

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate:
Environmental impacts of building practices, climate change, and rising sea levels are changing the landscape of architecture as a profession. Architects play a central role in selecting material and technology strategies, as well as developing robust adaptation strategies by addressing material impacts and climate stressors in their designs. Research, innovation, and community outreach are central and connected aspects of sustainable and resilient building practices. South Florida is ground zero for issues of coastal resiliency in particular. SoA has developed a coastal resiliency curriculum that capitalizes on civic and scholarly partnerships and aims to better familiarize students with these and other inter-related design, planning, regulatory issues, and the responding strategies under development.

The Environmental Justice Clinic provides rights education, interdisciplinary research, policy resources, and advocacy and transactional assistance to underserved low-and-moderate-income communities in the contexts of the built and natural environment across the fields of civil rights, environmental protection, poverty law, and public health.

The Master of Arts in Environment, Culture, and Media (ECM) integrates the study of the environment with emerging screen technologies, digital culture, cultural theory, and ethics. For new scientists, the defining creative and intellectual challenge of the 21st century exists in the use and design of digital content aimed at engaging an increasingly participatory media culture.
