Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree, or certificate program for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate degree program:
Ecosystem Science and Policy

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:

The Ecosystem Science and Policy program offers two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Students earning a B.S. in ECS must also complete a science track to deepen their understanding of a specific area. Students earning a B.A. in ECS complete a series of courses with a stronger social science focus. ECS courses for both degrees emphasize integration of science and policy approaches to real-world environmental issues. Students are required to complete either an environmentally related internship or a research project with the Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy or with other UM faculty.

Marine Ecosystems and Society

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):

The Department of Marine Ecosystems and Society (MES) fosters innovative, collaborative and multidisciplinary research and education centered on the conservation and sustainability of marine ecosystems and the services they provide to society. We define marine ecosystems broadly to include fisheries, aquaculture, coastal zones with fresh and marine water interfaces, which interact with weather and climate on a range of timescales.

Geography and Sustainable Development

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):

The B.A. is also an excellent option for students who plan to go to law school or graduate programs in human geography and related fields such as public health, urban planning, sustainable development, management, and corporate sustainability.

Our B.S. students often pursue a career in geography or pair these studies with a second major in computer science, architecture, engineering, economics, ecosystem science and policy, marine science, and biology.

We especially recommend our B.S. to students who plan to go to medical school or graduate programs in geography and related fields such as public health, urban planning, biodiversity conservation, environmental management, sustainable development, corporate sustainability, and geospatial science.

To obtain the sustainability certificate, students will complete the People & Society cognate “Global Sustainability: Living on a Finite Planet.” (For details on the cognate, see below or use the cognate [9 credits] search engine.)

The Global Sustainability cognate will earn students 9 of the 18 credits needed for the Sustainability Certificate. In addition, students will take 9 more credits from courses included in the cognate or from a list of approved courses (see below). Students may take the additional 9 credits to align with their major or minor, or individual interests (e.g., energy, green buildings, natural resource management).
