The Sustainability Committee is composed of a panel of diverse stakeholders and community members of our campus. It strives to promote a culture of environmental awareness through the university community, making sustainability one of the core value of our institution; we want to engage our students, faculty, staff, alumni and community as whole in improving our ecological footprint.
We want to diffuse sustainable practices that acknowledge the necessary balance between humans and their surrounding environment, and that minimize the impacts on our natural resources;
At the U, we transform lives through teaching, research and service. The mission of this committee is to develop an operational model that guarantees commitment to sustainability.

Green U - Office of Sustainability is located on the main campus. Its mission is to promote sustainability initiatives, and to monitor and report on the institution's progress on our sustainability action plan goals.

Our Sustainability manager coordinates the planning for our 3 campuses.Our main campus and our Marine and Atmospheric Science campuses have originally been proactive in getting sustainability on the agenda since the 2000's. Since 2015, a newly formed Green Committee at Miller has been intermittently managing sustainability efforts on our School of Medicine campus.

SUSTAINABILITY MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Sustainability manager will facilitate the University of Miami’s move towards carbon emission reduction by working with staff, students, faculty, and administrators to provide the knowledge, skills, and motivation that will integrate sustainable values and practices into the University’s Strategic planning process; the management of its resources and operations; facilities planning and design; research activities; the curriculum; and the extra-curricular life at the University.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide updated sustainability information for the Office of Sustainability’s website
• Develop the university’s GHG inventory and Sustainability Action Plans
• Prepare for submitting all sustainability reports, such as ACUPCC-2nd Nature Carbon emission reports and AASHE STARS report.
• Coordinate meetings of the Sustainability Committees on the 3 campuses
• Participate in other campus sustainable group meetings including student groups, and especially the Student Government ECO Agency
• Network with local, regional, and international sustainability-related initiatives
• Identify sustainable initiatives and assess their feasibility
• Research sustainable grant opportunities
• Interact with student organizations on sustainable initiatives and organization sponsored activities
• Interact with University community, faculty and staff on sustainable initiatives
• Facilitate events like Recycle Mania, Earth Day, World Water Day, Arbor Day...
• Facilitate energy and water conservation contests
• Develop sustainable information packets and online modules for incoming freshmen and new hires.
• Facilitate Green Office, Green Lab and other Sustainable best practices Programs for staff, faculty and students
• Benchmark with other university’s sustainable programs through the AASHE STARS report
• Help publicize, through the University Community Relations, the University sustainable initiatives and progress
• Report to the Director of Energy and Building Systems and AVP of Facilities and Operations on the state of sustainability at UM and key initiatives that could advance sustainability performance
• Develop pilot project concepts for new initiatives
• Work with Faculty and UM Divisions to bring initiatives across all to reduce our carbon footprint.
• Elaborate educational workshops and webinars for staff and faculty
. Work with Faculty and Researchers to promote Sustainability in the Curriculum as well as in Research.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to develop/analyze reports.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills(especially teaching and public speaking) .
Proficiency in MS Office, basic graphic design software, basic photo and video editing programs (e-mail newsletter, and social media).
Knowledge of generally accepted greenhouse gas accounting principles and best practices.
High organizational skills.
Must be independent and take charge of projects.
Being a team worker.
Good supervising skills (recruiting, training and delegating tasks to a small team of student-interns).

QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Master's Degree (Preferred) in environmental science, sustainability, or related area. LEED Green Associate or PA certified is a plus

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Three (3) years in sustainability or environmental field specifically within a managerial role.

Job description
Student will monitor, report and promote current Single Stream Recycling program and other waste diversion programs (Toner, Coffee, ..)
Student will promote current Green programs (office, labs, events) by presenting to faculty and student groups
Student will help Green U with Sustainability reports data collection (STARS, GHG Inventory, Waste Diversion)
Student will work on a Funding strategy for sustainability projects (Grant applications, Alumni donations, and Private partnerships)
Student will help the Sustainability manager organize, promote and assess Green U events
Student will be supporting energy/water conservation audits, utility rates and payback/ROI analysis.
Student will help monitor our online tracking tools and use the data to support our energy/water conservation outreach campaigns.
Student will be monitoring & reporting on project progress, milestones, objectives and issues within specified frequency.
Student will make visits to all departments to stay apprised of conditions or problems regarding customer energy/water conservation efforts.

Skills required:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with ability to effectively handle conflict resolution and problem solving.
• Must agree to help with some light physical work linked to event logistics
• Must have excellent people skills in order to build positive relationships with staff, customers and stakeholders.
