A brief description of the institution’s cultural competence, anti-oppression, anti-racism, and/or social inclusion trainings and activities:
The University of Massachusetts Lowell believes in the importance of creating a safe and healthy environment for all of our employees and other communities. To this end, UMass Lowell partnered with third-party provider EVERFI to provide trainings that will help all staff be informed on topics vital to achieving our goal. These trainings, in addition to being highly interactive and engaging, are based in research around the best practices for communicating and maintaining healthy relationships with your colleagues and students and encourage reflection on social inclusion, among other topics. Completion of EVERFI courses is required for all employees of UMass Lowell.

For students, the required first-year and transfer orientation programs include trainings and activities from many components of campus life including the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA). OMA also runs a well-attended, supplemental Student Success Summit that serves the following cohorts:

- new students of color
- new international students
- new DC-CAP students
- Disability Services
- LGBTQ+ students
- all first year and transfer students, and more

The Student Success Summit is required for international students and more information can be found at the following location:

This program will provide you with the skills to empower you to take this challenging but important role.

Knowledge, Skills and Awareness: Develop Your Cultural Competence:
Developing cultural competence means that we move toward a deeper understanding and acceptance of ourselves and others. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to explore (1) personal values and experiences, (2) how these personal experiences impact behavior and relationships with others, and (3) the ways in which University policies and practices contribute to creating an inclusive and positive work environment.

Develop Your Cultural Competence Lunch & Learn Session:
Join your colleagues in reading articles which present research and perspectives on issues relating to understanding diversity and inclusion, developing cultural competence, and increasing personal awareness.
