A brief description of the institution’s formal participatory or shared governance bodies:

The University of Massachusetts system is governed by a 22-member Board of Trustees that represents various interests of the public at large on a non-partisan basis. Seventeen members of the board are appointed by the Governor and five members are UMass students elected by the student body on each of the five campuses. The Board of Trustees functions as a legislative body dealing mainly with general policies governing the University. The Board is not an administrative or management board. The primary governance body for students is the student government association: https://www.uml.edu/sga/

Non-academic staff are represented by eight bargaining units and one non-unit group at UMass Lowell. Coordination for decision-making and plan/policy formulation occurs through formal meetings with university leadership.

A brief description of the campus-community council or equivalent body that gives external stakeholders a regular voice in institutional decisions that affect them:

UMass Lowell's Chancellor and Executive Cabinet host quarterly meetings with the City of Lowell Manager/Mayor to discuss campus-community issues and opportunities. These meetings are attended by university and City staff along with elected officials (Lowell City Council).

This campus-community council has championed major sustainability initiatives between UMass Lowell and the City of Lowell including the Lowell Green Community Partnership, the Live in Lowell program, and the Lowell TIGER Bridges Repair/Replacement project.
