The UMass Lowell Office of Sustainability was authorized in 2014 and was formally adopted as of January, 2015. The office provides the university with centralized sustainability services and an increased opportunity for collaboration across all university departments.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy is the university’s center for hands-on research on sustainability, climate change and renewable energy. Our goal is to create blueprints for human scale sustainability in communities throughout our region and across the world.

The Rist Institute for Sustainability and Energy brings together the university’s extensive research and teaching enterprise and merges these with campus operations through the Office of Sustainability to create a campus-wide approach to addressing sustainability, energy and climate change.

Serve as the epicenter for UMass Lowell’s sustainability efforts, the Rist Institute has been directly involved in over $37.5M of energy and sustainability related research in the last three years. It has led the development of UMass Lowell's first Carbon Mitigation and Energy Master Plan in support of continued climate action. The Rist Institute also engages with over 140 campus and community partners to advance sustainability on our campus, in our community, and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
