Does the institution host a food bank, pantry, or equivalent resource focused on alleviating food insecurity, hunger and poverty among students?:
Yes
A brief description of the food bank, pantry, or equivalent resource:
The UMass Lowell food pantry was created by the Navigators, a student organization at the university. The Navigator organization, based on a limited budget and resources, started the food pantry, but as food insecurity amongst students grew, there was a greater need of a larger space.
Today, the food pantry is centrally located on campus and provides food access to students and staff that experience hunger. The pantry shifted to an online ordering system in the pandemic and works with the Office of Sustainability to source donations. A recent, successful initiative made fresh veggies available through a CSA partnership with local non-profit organization Mill City Grows.
