1st program

Name of the student educators program (1st program):
Eco Reps

A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
UMass Lowell’s student Eco Reps are students who raise awareness about environmental and ecological issues to the campus community. Eco Reps provide solutions to peers and partners across the university community, including administrative staff members. Eco Reps attend training meetings hosted by the office of sustainability at the beginning of each semester, with the goal of identifying areas of interest or concern from the perspective of the student body.

A key responsibility of being an Eco Rep at UMass Lowell is involvement with the student-majority committee for the S.E.E.D. Fund program. Eco Reps review project proposals with fellow committee members and select award winning projects to be funded up to $10,000. S.E.E.D. Fund awarded projects feature innovative sustainability ideas and initiatives to improve the campus environment and community. Eco Reps are also involved in several sustainability-hosted events throughout the academic year ranging from admissions to open house events, urban agriculture site tours, to leading recycle drives at hockey games. Eco Reps play a key role in the beginning of the academic year with move-in recycling and donations and Fall into Recycling initiatives, as well as move-out recycling and donations and Spring into Recycling initiatives. In addition to these campus events and initiatives, there are volunteer opportunities, such as garden cleanups, led by Eco Reps throughout the academic year.

A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):
The UMass Lowell Eco Reps engage with student peers, campus administration, staff, faculty, and the local community surrounding the university. The mission of the Eco Reps program is to highlight the importance of sustainability and environmental concerns that the students have and show how the students are implementing real change to work towards resolutions. A key factor of being an Eco Rep at UMass Lowell is considering and involving future generations and prospective students to establish a lasting legacy.
