Name of the institution’s featured sustainability program, initiative, or accomplishment:
Energy Master Plan
A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The University started work on an Energy Master Plan. The goal is to find out how we can reduce our carbon output to zero by 2030, or 2040 at the latest. We created a Request for Proposals, selected 7 semi-finalists for interviews/presentations, and then checked references on 3 firms, ultimately selecting 1.
The process of creating the Energy Master Plan is scheduled to take a year to complete. They will look at our current energy use, at a building by building and hour by hour basis. They will examine our future campus master plan growth schedule to happen over the next 10 years and leaving room for expansions over the next 30 years. They will examine all possible energy systems and then evaluate which ones would be best suited for our campus. This will include a general theme of moving us off of a steam-based system to low temperature hot water and chilled water loops in a district heating system.

Carbon Reduction Pledges
A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
Building on the university’s 2007 Second Nature Climate Commitment pledging to reduce our emissions by 80% by the year 2050, in 2019 UMass Dartmouth students held discussions with the administration to update our campus commitments as follows:
A. Carbon neutrality by 2030, 2050 at the latest
B. Creation of the Chancellor's Carbon Commitment Committee with student representation to monitor the progress toward making this commitment happen
C. A statement that the campus would use Life-Cycle Cost Analysis on all energy projects for both cost and carbon impacts of decisions.

EPA Award for Handling Organic Waste
A brief description of the third program/initiative/accomplishment:
In July 2019 the campus was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency for our approach to handling organic waste. This included pre-consumer trimmings that were sent to a chicken farm, post-consumer waste going to a local pig farm, coffee grounds going to an organic farm to enrich their compost, and all fryer oil being sent to a bio-diesel manufacturer.
