UMass Dartmouth has a long history of providing shared governance. This includes several deliberative bodies like the Student Senate, Graduate Student Senate, and the Faculty Senate. It also includes 5 unions, which are well represented structurally in the operations of the campus.

The University has a standing committee with the Town of Dartmouth. This Town-Gown committee meets on a regular basis and has several members of the Board of Selectmen (highest authority), the Town Administrator (daily point person) and other members of town administration as needed by topic.
