The Energy and Carbon Master Plan

A brief description of the institution’s featured program, initiative, or accomplishment:
The Energy and Carbon Master Plan is the most recent and explicit effort to decarbonize The University by 2050. This initiative is a result of the University's dedication to mitigating the risks of climate change and inequity, and falls in line with the Executive Order 594 from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts that requires all state entities to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This plan will utilize technologies such as heat pumps, seawater pumps, energy efficiency measures, and renewable energy to ultimately decarbonize the campus. This plan will be completed in May 2023, and implementation is expected to begin in the timeframe from 2023 to 2050.

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Sustainable Solutions Lab is a collaborative research and action institute focused on keeping historically excluded people and communities safe and healthy in the face of climate change. The institute focuses on groundbreaking research across six school and four institutes within the university. SSL also prioritizes community partnership to influence climate resilience in local areas.
