A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
The University of Massachusetts Boston, UMass or UMB, is the only public research university in Boston, Massachusetts. It is one of five campuses in the University of Massachusetts system. It is primarily a commuter school, which makes it a very interesting campus for sustainability. Additionally, UMass Boston is the third most diverse university in the United States. The institution's main campus that was considered when completing this report sits on what is called Columbia Point, a peninsula that sits in Dorchester Bay.
UMass Boston's Strategic Plan identifies the university as "a university for the times." This concept, outlined in the 2022 Strategic Plan, is especially important in the areas of student success, diversity, deepened connections with local communities, impactful scholarship and research, and reimagined campus spaces. All of these strategic priorities are interwoven with concepts of sustainability, and guide much of the university's goal setting and future planning. The campus' Energy and Carbon Master Plan was developed not only with the strategic priorities in mind, but also with the goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by the year 2050.
UMass Boston's updated Master Plan also approaches the campus with sustainable learning, growing, and collaborating in mind. To support the University's sustainability goals, the Master Plan tackles the physical space of campus, and deals directly with institutional boundaries laid out in this report. Both the Master Plan and this STARS report examine the 99 acres of campus above water, which includes an educational field station on the island of Nantucket. Buildings such as academic buildings, parking structures, a residence hall, dining halls, laboratory spaces, a library and learning/study spaces make up 3,072,217.0 gross square feet of space on campus.
