A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Members of the Sustainable UMass student team (formally the Campus Sustainability Initiative) created the campus' first electronic waste recycling center on campus at the end of spring 2013. This project was done in partnership with the W.E.B. Du Bois Library, where the unit that houses the recycled e-waste material, now known on campus as the "Green Monstah," is stationed. The "Green Monstah" unit itself was developed and designed by Waste Reduction Sustainability Fellows and students from the Building and Construction Technology Department. Together these students constructed the wooden recycling receptacle in the UMass Wood Shop, painted it a “Fenway Green,” and designed signage to ensure that all members of campus would be aware of this new and easy way to recycle their e-waste. Since it's inception the Green Monstah e-waste recycling program has empowered the campus community to recycle over 500 electronic waste items. Green student leaders on campus are continuing to monitor the bins at the recycling station on a weekly basis and are working closely with the Office of Waste Management to transport the e-waste to the recycling facility on campus.
