A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
The University of Massachusetts Amherst has taken a pivotal step toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting regional food security and the local food economy of New England by becoming the largest food service provider in the nation to sign on to the Real Food Challenge Campus Commitment. By signing UMass has pledged to procure 20% of all our food from real, local, organic, humane food sources by 2020. As part of these efforts we have created the new UMA Real Food Internship program as well, to promote student education and activism in the process.
The internship is a rapidly growing student-led campaign that involves students in food purchasing decisions for UMass Amherst's award-winning dining services. Students earn 2 credits and gain valuable knowledge about food justice, environmental implications surrounding food, marketing, and business strategies involved in purchase-changing.
