A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
A new, innovative Center for Agriculture (CFA) research project involves high pole-mounted photovoltaic arrays, in dual use with pasture land located on the UMass Amherst’s South Deerfield research farm, which is also run by the CFA. Research will determine correct spacing to allow healthy pasture growth underneath for grazing by livestock. This research site with 70 PV panels will demonstrate potential benefits to farmers and to the energy industry as an alternative to ground placement of PV panels, which effectively removes the land from future agricultural use. The PV panels were installed in Fall 2010.
