Narrative outlining the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
The University of Mary Washington’s main campus, comprised of 234 acres, is within walking distance of downtown Fredericksburg, Virginia, a tight-knit area filled with historic sites, art galleries, restaurants and craft breweries. The tree-lined campus is located near the scenic Rappahannock River, 50 miles south of the nation’s capital of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles north of the state capital of Richmond, Virginia. UMW also has two smaller campuses, which are located in Stafford and King George counties, as well as two museums – the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library, and Gari Melchers Home and Studio at Belmont.
UMW’s Stafford Campus is a 48-acre site that includes two 40,000-square-foot ADA-compliant buildings and is home to the new lab school for high-schoolers, the Academy of Technology and Innovation at UMW. The campus is located off U.S. Route 17 in Stafford County, about seven miles north of the City of Fredericksburg.
UMW’s Dahlgren Campus occupies 27 acres and is located off U.S. Route 301 in King George County, about 27 miles east of Fredericksburg. The site includes a state-of-the-art 42,000-square-foot facility filled with environmentally friendly features. The campus is located near the Potomac River; just outside the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, naval base; and within a five-mile drive to Maryland.
UMW’s James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library holds the country’s largest collection of memorabilia related to the fifth president of the United States, including the desk on which he wrote the famous Monroe Doctrine. The museum is located on Charles Street in the downtown area of historic Fredericksburg, less than a mile from Mary Washington’s main campus.
UMW’s Gari Melchers Home and Studio, also known as Belmont, is a 27-acre estate located on Washington Street in the Falmouth district of Stafford County, near the Rappahannock River and just a few miles from Fredericksburg. The 18th-century structure, which belonged to American artist Gari Melchers from 1916 until his death in 1932, is also a National Historic Landmark.
