The charter or mission statement of the CIR or other body which reflects social and environmental concerns or a brief description of how the CIR is tasked to address social and environmental concerns:

The Responsible Investing Committee (RIC) was formed in 2020 as a subcommittee of the Trust Investment Committee for the purpose of advising and recommending environmentally and socially responsible investments in the University endowment funds.

The RIC is tasked with making a policy on Responsible Investing and making recommendations to the Trust Investment Committee as they pertain to responsible investing covering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, active ownership and proxy voting, Indigenous reconciliation, impact investing and other issues that may be determined.

As of January 2022, going forward the Responsible Investment Committee will be focusing on:
- Recommending a draft Responsible Investment Policy for adoption by UM’s Board of Governors
- Recommending targets and dates for reducing the endowment fund’s carbon footprint
- Recommending impact investment opportunities with Indigenous organizations
- Continuing education and engaging with stakeholders and leaders in ESG
- Engaging with the UM community on all issues related to responsible investing

Following the establishment of the committee, it has been tasked with developing its Terms of Reference and a Responsible Investing Policy. It has established the measurement of preliminary carbon footprint calculations and supported the Trust Investment Committee on the engagement of the Shareholder Association for Research and Education (SHARE) to promote active shareholder representation and proxy voting.
