A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
The Office of Sustainability participates in new student welcome activities through in-person orientation when COVID-19 restrictions have allowed. In addition, UM Essentials is a mandatory online course for students studying at either of the two campuses or five satellite locations. This course is intended to help prepare students for their studies at the University of Manitoba. The course is broken down into eight modules that are intended to:
• Introduce students to offices at the university and the services and resources they offer. This includes the Office of Sustainability and all events and programs available to students to participate in.
• Familiarize students with UM Learn, the University’s Learning Management System, where most courses will operate in the Fall. There are additional Sustainability-based courses that students can voluntarily sign up for.
• Connect students with colleagues with similar academic interests through discussion boards and groups.
• Help students learn about the University community and help them find communities to connect with. This includes the Office of Sustainability’s Sustainability Ambassador program, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Student Hub and student groups with a focus on sustainability.
Both online and in-person orientation events are intended to support the goals of the Sustainability Strategy 2019-2023, including how students can get involved and what resources are available to help them be successful and further their sustainability education.
