The Makoonsag Inter-generational Children's Centre is a brand new daycare located right next door to Urban Circle at 527 Selkirk Avenue with 40 pre-school and 12 infant spaces. The centre also has 30 school-age spaces which have recently been added. The interior of the childcare centre features a large Spirit Room envisioned by Elder Stella Blackbird that is used for children's indoor play as well as for inter-generational cultural activities and ceremonies with parents, families and Elders. A large adjoining fenced and landscaped play yard creates a safe place for children to enjoy the outdoors in every season. Makoonsag Inter-generational Children’s Centre/Urban Circle Training Centre support all three dimensions of sustainability through inner-city revitalization projects that improve social, economic and environmental conditions. This partnership is ongoing and no termination to this program has been identified. The University of Manitoba provided capital funding and material support for the Makoonsag Inter-generational Children’s Centre facility operated by the Urban Circle Training Centre. The University of Manitoba and the Karnataka Health Promotion Trust works on maternal, neonatal and child health (MNCH) situational analysis. Along with other affiliate organizations, such as the Centre for Global Public Health and Indian Health Action Trust, the U of M provides technical assistance to the National Rural Health Mission of the Government of Karnataka to improve MNCH outcomes in India. The Trust also supports issues such as adolescent health and education, violence against women, tuberculosis, nutrition, orphans and vulnerable children, HIV/AIDS, and community institution planning. Adolescent Health and Education: They empower girls from underserved communities to claim their rights to health and education. Violence against Women: They empower marginalized women to lead a life without violence. Tuberculosis: They facilitate public private collaboration and community engagement for sustained prevention, care and control of tuberculosis. Nutrition: They help alleviate under- nutrition through nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions. Orphan and Vulnerable Children: We improve access to health, education, social protection and welfare services for vulnerable children. HIV / AIDS: They support at risk communities to reduce their vulnerability to HIV / AIDS and access care and services. Community Institution Building: They work with communities and help build community institutions to enhance the power of marginalized groups to demand services and assert their rights and dignity. Karnataka Health Promotion Trust supports two of the three dimensions of sustainability through social equity and well-being, and economic prosperity. The University of Manitoba offers substantial financial grants for KHPT. The University financially supports Partners for Health and Development in Africa (PHDA) in Kenya. The PHDA Kenyan Research Centre is a non-profit organization registered in Kenya, working in the health and development fields in Kenya and elsewhere in Africa. PHDA is affiliated to the University of Manitoba and builds on a 30-year legacy of successful HIV/AIDS research, prevention and care programs that have been implemented by a collaborative group of scientists and public health professionals from the University of Manitoba, the University of Nairobi, the Government of Kenya and other partners. PHDA works closely with governments, scientists, and partners in key related thematic areas to deliver excellent results in community led, participatory development programs in health and other fields. Partners for Health and Development in Africa supports two of the three dimensions of sustainability through social equity and well-being, and economic prosperity. The duration of for this partnership is ongoing and no termination to this program has been identified. The University of Manitoba University of Manitoba renewed a Memorandum of Understanding and institutional cooperation agreements on material and financial support such as student and faculty exchange, student visitation, research collaboration and facilities management cooperation with both PHDA and the University of Nairobi. The agreements reaffirm three decades of collaboration and $50 million CAD in shared funding.
