A brief description of the program, including examples of peer-to-peer outreach activities:
Residence Advisors (RAs) are responsible for promoting sustainable lifestyle choices in the residence and ensuring students are complying with sustainability initiatives in residence. They are responsible for hanging and maintaining signage on using the correct waste/recycling bins and kitchen practices and distributing information on and promoting participation in e-waste collection or clothing donation campaigns.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected:
All Residence Advisors are required to complete sustainability training during their orientation before the start of the Fall semester. They also receive a Green Residence Handbook as reference throughout the year.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach:
RA training includes information on sustainability focused campaigns run through the Office of Sustainability, how students in residence can help, and how the initiatives for living a sustainable lifestyle can be promoted. The Green Residence Handbook contains tips, quick facts and contacts for Waste, Energy, Transportation, Kitchen and Water sustainability initiatives.

A brief description of the financial and/or administrative support the institution provides to the program (e.g. annual budget and/or faculty/staff coordination):
RA sustainability training is created and the sessions are administered by the Office of Sustainability Director and Outreach Coordinator.

Peers: Students Helping Students provides an approachable and confidential resource for all University of Manitoba students who have questions, need to talk with someone about personal issues or topics, or have concerns about academics. The program consists of student volunteers who receive intensive training to be supportive listeners, skilled communicators, and campus connectors.

A brief description of how the student educators are selected (2nd program):
Students interested in becoming Peers volunteers submit applications to the Peers: Students Helping Students Center or the University of Manitoba's Students Union. Every year 20-35 volunteers are selected from the applicants based on the contents of their resume, their availability to commit a minimum of 6 hours per week, and their previous related experience.

A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive to prepare them to conduct peer outreach (2nd program):
Peers complete an intensive training program led by the Department of Student Affairs professionals. In the first term, Peers begin with a mandatory training weekend in September and then continue with weekly meetings throughout the year. Topics covered in training may include the following: - active listening and empathic communication; - crisis intervention; -important student-related issues and topics; - marketing and promotion skills; - Training topics may be given by programs or groups on or off campus with particular expertise in these topics.

The Peers Program Coordinator is hired and employed through the University of Manitoba's Student Union (UMSU) and is run within their portfolio.
