Title or keywords related to the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Winter Cycling
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Much of the academic year at the University of Manitoba is spent in subzero temperatures (average January low temperature is -20C, winter lasts 4+ months). As a result, recent efforts have been put forth to address the need for winter cycling improvements at the Fort Garry campus. In 2014, the 2nd International Winter Cycling Congress partnered with the University of Manitoba to deliver a workshop, which assisted in generating future goals and strategies that could be applied locally. There is ongoing research into which infrastructure improvements are required to encourage/support winter cycling, particularly bike parking shelters (indoors/outdoors). The generation of a Facebook group dedicated to the winter cyclists of the University of Manitoba has assisted in the sharing of information between riders.
A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):
Sustainable winter transportation mode-share:
1) Healthier students/staff
2) Decrease in stress related illnesses
3) Increase in productivity
