• Applied botany: Provide a broad overview of important plants, the role plants play in human life. Topics covered: Plant classification, nutrition, pests/pesticides and plant protection
• Arboriculture: Goals of the course is to understand the principles of care and maintenance of trees and shrubs in the landscape, learn procedures in maintenance of trees and shrubs, and understand concepts of the effects of the urban environments on the growth of woody plants
• Field production of Floral Crops: Teaches the steps to plan and establish a production field of floral crops. Students receive enough information to be able to grow, establish, maintain and harvest selected floral crops.
• Fruit Production: Class serves as an understanding of recommendations made in grower’s manuals for all possible fruit crops
• Greenhouse Structures and Environments: Teaches the fundamental greenhouse construction and maintenance. It provides information on specialized features of greenhouse structures and environmental controls
• Greenhouse Crop Production: Overview of the prairie greenhouse industry, chemical and biological pest control and the production of bedding plants, potted and flowering plants and vegetables.
• Herbaceous Landscape plants: Classification, characteristics and cultural requirements for herbaceous plants
• Nursery Crop production: Covers the principles and practices of the production of trees, shrubs and perennials in field and container situations in a commercial business environment.
• Postharvest Handling of Food Crops: Covers the importance of handling, and storage practices to maintain the quality of fresh fruits and vegetables in the Canadian Prairies
• Propagation: Principles and practices for propagating horticultural plants.
• Integrated Plant Management: Introduction to basics of identifying, monitoring, predicting, timing and managing the horticultural, environmental and pest factors affecting plants.
• Safe Work/Pesticide Application: Teaches safe and effective control of pests in greenhouses, nurseries, horticulture field crop and landscaped area. Non mandated pesticide applicators in the Prairie Provinces will learn about safety procedures in using pesticides.
• Soils for Horticulture: Basic concepts of soil sciences with emphasis on the specific concerns of the diverse specialties of horticulture. Course covers basic requirements for plant growth in both field and potting environments. The course focuses on methods of improving soil fertility and soil structure for plant growth
• Woody Landscape plants: Study about the classification, identification, landscape characteristics, adaptations, cultural requirements, value and use of plants common in prairie landscapes
