Student research projects (for credit and/or as volunteers) in support of sustainability objectives including energy conservation, energy demand reduction from landscaping and controllable building energy management.

Student research projects (for credit and/or as volunteers) in support of sustainability objectives including energy conservation, energy demand reduction from landscaping and controllable building energy management.


A brief description of how the institution is using the campus as a living laboratory for Dining Services/Food and the positive outcomes associated with the work:

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff at least eight students completed research and wrote reports that contributed to a master UofM Food Baseline document that will be used to shape how the food system will continue to evolve.

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff, a student on internship for his architecture degree, using information provided by Physical Plant and the Office of Sustainability designed an infographic demonstrating the systems used to power the Fort Garry Campus.

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff, a student volunteer researched the carbon footprint the university Grounds department creates by caring for the landscape.

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff, a student intern, investigated the current purchasing practices at the University and offered possible alternatives to some of the products currently being purchased.

Student research projects (for credit and/or as volunteers) in support of sustainability objectives including active transportation and pedestrian safety.

A summer intern used old pallets, scrap wood and old, broken furniture to create a bench which was displayed in the UofM Bookstore for a week. A narrative of how it was conceived and created was attached to the bench. It currently forms part of the décor in the Office of Sustainability.

An intern under the guidance of Sustainability, Health and Wellness and Marketing and Communication Staff designed a Sustainability Guide and Walking Tour that caters to all campus users.

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff, a two (2) students investigated responsible investment by the university as it relates to investment in healthy foods and a healthy food system as a responsible investment in students' physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.

Student research projects (for credit and/or as volunteers) in support of sustainability objectives including nature engagement or sustainable food have used a variety of engagement and outreach methods to involve community in understanding an issue or evaluating possible directions/alternatives.

Under the supervision of Sustainability staff a summer intern investigated how the use of street art gave voice and freedom of artistic expression to inner city children facilitated by a not for profit organization in Winnipeg and also how street art in general, especially in inner city communities served as a form of political and social protest and rebellion against the status quo.
