Together, the Office of Multicultural Student Life, Office of Equal Opportunity, and UMDLI support student and employee diversity and equity at the University of Maine. The Office of Multicultural Student Life works to actively promote an inclusive learning environment by enhancing institutional efforts in retaining and graduating students prepared for a diverse global society. The offices promotes the academic success and leadership development of students through intentional programs and services that holistically address cultural, educational and civic growth (from https://umaine.edu/multicultural/). Additionally, the Office of Equal Opportunity, is responsible for: 1. Disseminate information about laws, policies, and procedures regarding equal opportunity, discrimination, retaliation, and discriminatory harassment, including sexual harassment, to the University community; 2. Present education training to faculty, staff, and students about their rights and responsibilities with regard to equal opportunity; 3. Provide information to hiring units regarding the University’s nondiscrimination and affirmative action obligations when hiring; 4. Inform individuals and units about the University of Maine System’s Equal Opportunity Complaint Procedure; 5. Many more duties Finally, UMaine also supports the The University of Maine Diversity Leadership Institute (UMDLI), whose mission is to support “the commitment of the University to “developing and sustaining a multicultural and pluralistic educational community that encourages the full participation of all of its members.” The UMDLI’s mission is to provide and cultivate opportunities to understand, appreciate, support and strengthen the diversity of our community(https://umaine.edu/umdli/mission-goals/).

The Office of Multicultural Student Life offers open-session Diversity Trainings. These are 2.5-hour interactive trainings that cover the basics of the big 8 identities in the United States and foundational concepts for diversity and inclusion; including terminology, privilege, and the cycle of oppression. Student, staff, faculty, and community members are welcome to attend these trainings. These training are also provided to specific departments or groups by request.
