UMaine has the President's Council on Sustainability, which serves to define and shape a path forward that substantively guides and supports our own campus efforts yet establishes a national leadership profile for the University of Maine. Goals include: Regularly review the general scope and impact of sustainability programs and initiatives at UMaine; Effectively participate in national forums and databases that assess sustainability success and impact such as the ACUPCC and the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) affiliated with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE); Generally assess how best to participate in and address state/national/international discussions on sustainability; Engage in and sponsor creative discussions to discern new initiatives and strategies to promote sustainability with linkages to impactful and cost-effective results; Determine effective communication strategies to further the awareness and impact of the sustainability efforts at the University of Maine ranging from website design, research and teaching publications, news features, and public presentations.

The Office of Sustainability is committed to working with all UMaine constituents to reduce the environmental footprint of the campus. Through ongoing education and outreach efforts, it is our goal that sustainability awareness and a genuine concern for the health of our environment become second nature to each and every member of the UMaine community.

The UMaine Office of Sustainability works with departments and offices across the entire campus to promote sustainability at UMaine. Recent activities and accomplishments include:
1. Maine’s public universities achieve a ten-year, 34% reduction in carbon emissions. (2017)
2. Environmental, Social, & Governance (ESG) principles now taken under consideration when completing asset allocation and investment manager reviews in the UMS Managed Investment Pool. (2017)
3. UMaine sources over 20% of food locally (2018)
4. Launch of SPIRE: The Maine Journal of Conservation and Sustainability (2017)
5. Launch of the Green Office Certification Program (2018)
6. On-going lighting upgrades across campus (2016-2018)
7. Installation of 12 EV charging stations, with more planned in the future (2016-2018)
