The methodologies used to identify endangered and vulnerable species and/or environmentally sensitive areas (including most recent year assessed) and any ongoing assessment and monitoring mechanisms:
Stantec Consulting was contracted by the University of Maine to complete natural resources surveys on a portion of the University of Maine campus in Orono, ME in 2009 and 2010. The scope of the project included the delineation of wetlands and streams, identification of vernal pools, and identification of rare plant species and natural communities. The survey area was generally limited to the developed portions of campus (i.e., 420 acres) and to that area within 750 feet of existing development (i.e., 596 acres).” There are no ongoing assessment and monitoring mechanisms at this time.
A brief description of identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:
Stantec identified 81 wetlands within the survey area. 21 of these wetlands are classified as "Wetlands of Special Significance". Additionally:
1. 13 of the delineated wetlands are stream associated
2. 5 wetlands occur within the mapped floodplain of the Stillwater River
3. 3 wetlands included greater than 20,000 square feet of emergent and/or open water.
4. One wetland is mapped Inland Waterfowl and Wading Bird Habitat
5. 24 wetlands contain one or more vernal pools, 5 of which are Significant Vernal Pools (most of which contained wood frog and/or spotted salamander egg masses).
A brief description of plans or programs in place to protect or positively affect identified species, habitats and/or environmentally sensitive areas:
There are no specific plans or programs in place to protect the identified species, habitats, and environmentally sensitive areas outside of the U.S Army Corps of Engineers and Maine Department of Environmental Protection permitting process.
