Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Forest Bioproducts Research Institute
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI) was launched in 2006 with the mission to “advance understanding about the scientific underpinnings, system behavior, and policy implications for the production of forest-based bioproducts that meet societal needs for materials, chemicals and fuels in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner.” The goal is to create fossil fuel reduction solutions focused on sustainable forest management and the creation of innovative bioproducts. FBRI leads the way in bioproduct research. Recent ground-breaking research includes:
1. Landowner and Public Acceptance of Bio-products in Maine
2. Fuels and Chemicals from Woody Biomass-Derived Syngas
3. Incremental Biomass Harvesting
4. Fermentation of Pulp Mill-derived Hemicellulose Extract to Ethanol
5. Modeling the Environmental Implications of Emerging Industrial Ecology-based Bio-refinery System
6. A Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment of Cellulosic Nanofibers Used in Green Building Materials
7. Modeling the Sustainability of Wood-Based Bio-refinery and its Supply Chain
8. Life Cycle Assessment of Wood Chips for Biofuels Production
9. Coupling LCA and GIS for biodiversity assessments of forest resource based bioethanol production
10. A System Approach to Sustainable Supply Chains of Bio-fuels
