Pledge Against Plastic Straws Challenge

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:

During April 2018, the UMaine Office of Sustainability participated in the #Pledgeagainstplasticstraws challenge hosted by Simply Straws. UMaine competed against over 60 other Universities to see how many students and employees would pledge to not use plastic straws. Outreach efforts included tabling in the union, an article in the student paper, a article in the campus news, and social media posts on the Office of Sustainability facebook page.

UMaine came in 9th place with 87 pledges from both students and employees.

Green Office Certification Program

A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):

The UMaine Office of Sustainability create a Green Office Certification program in Spring 2018. The office certification is available to anyone with an office or desk work space, including employees, graduate students, and undergraduate student workers. The Office Certification involves an online survey that encourages the survey taker to adopt energy saving and waste reduction strategies. Only those who score 75% or higher on the survey obtain a "green office certification".

Since the start of the campaign in Spring 2018, over 75 offices have received the Green Office Certification as a result of the adoption of energy saving and waste reduction strategies.
