Sustainability is the quality of a system such that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainability requires the reconciliation of environmental, social, and economic concerns.

To complete the inventory each publication was thoroughly checked in order to verify the publication matched the sustainability definition. A compilation of all university research, along with a website where all university research can be found was used to complete the inventory.
