Developed in 2009 and officially established in 2011, the President's Council on Sustainability is a campus-wide advisory body that helps guide the university's efforts to integrate environmental sustainability into campus life, including operations, educational programs, research, and community outreach by facilitating awareness of sustainability issues and the promotion of individual responsibility for reducing the University’s impact on the environment.

A brief description of each sustainability office:

The Office of Sustainability was established in 2014 with the hire of a full-time director. Our vision is for the entire University community to become more aware of our impacts on the environment and our community, at the institutional level and at our own personal level. The Office of Sustainability launched its first Sustainability Strategic Plan in Summer of 2018 and works towards completing the comprehensive goals laid out in the plan. As of Spring 2020, the Office of Sustainability has 2 FTEs, 3 graduate assistants, and 5 undergraduate student workers.

A brief description of the activities and substantive accomplishments of the institution-wide coordinating body or officer during the previous three years:

The Office of Sustainability leads sustainability initiatives across the institution with the goal of implementing all measures outlined in the Sustainability Strategic Plan and empowering campus departments to take on responsibilities for sustainable operations internally as well. The Sustainability Strategic Plan launched in Summer of 2018 and has led to significant achievements in overall campus sustainability including: 1. The establishement of a University-wide stormwater master plan. This plan was submitted to the 2019 EPA Rainworks Challenge and came in first place for the master plan category. 2. The establishment of a Campus as a Living Lab program that, among other projects, is piloting the first commercial-scale compost project in the state of Louisiana and has successfully diverted compostable waste and serviceware from two season's worth of NCAA football games. 3. The launch of the Sustainability Faculty Fellows program that trains select faculty to incorporate sustainability and the SDGs into their classes and provides a stipend for them to rework or create new syllabi. 4. Opening of the Photovoltaic Applied Research and Testing (PART) Lab, a 1.1 MW PV Solar Installation on campus to perform long-term operational testing of a commercial-scale photovoltaic electric generation system under actual conditions in Louisiana. 5. The establishment of a minor in sustainability available to all University students (PENDING).
